The production of fine titanium dioxide by means of the sulphate process results in hard clinkers. These clinkers must then be ground to the desired particle size. The aim here is to achieve the most economical grinding process possible with good pigment quality and low energy consumption. The grinding process is realized with several successive steps. The first crushing step plays a key role here, since breaking up the clinkers is energy-intensive and efficient pre-crushing significantly reduces the load on the subsequent steps.

Efficient preliminary crushing saves resources and thus represents a significant economic advantage.
For the first size reduction stage, grinding with a high-pressure grinding system, which breaks the clinker with two counter-rotating rollers, has become established in recent years. Compared with the pendulum mill used in the past, this grinding technology is characterized above all by its much lower energy requirement. Another advantage: no grinding aids are needed.
